Sceilig Mhichíl

Skellig Michael

Visit Sceilig Mhichíl

Sceilig Mhichíl is a UNESCO designated heritage site off the coast of Ballinskelligs in Co. Kerry. It has long been a centre of pilgrimage and spirituality. Recently it gained notoriety as a location for one of the Star Wars films. Climb the 700 carved stone steps to the sheltered monastic settlement which was home to Augustinian monks for 100's of years. Marvel at how they survived the rugged lifestyle and developed their unique spirituality.

Tháinig na manaigh to dtí an toileán aláinn, iargúlta seo sa 6ú aois. D’fhanadar to dtí gur chuir an droch-aimsir an ruaig orthu sa 13ú aois. Feictear an mhainistir comh maith inniu is a bhí nuair a mhair na manaigh ann fadó. Tá Sceilig Mhichíl faoi stiúir an OPW, a thugann aire dó ar son Rialtais na h-Eireann.

On Day 2, we will explore Valencia Island and the surrounding Ballinskelligs area (which has recently been designated an international Dark Sky Reserve) in the company of our local historian and guide, Mike Moriarty. We will stay in local country house B&B's on Valencia Island.

Dates Details
Day 1 Arrive in self-catering accommodation in Coill Trá, Ballinskelligs, in the afternoon/evening. Light meal/refreshments at Coill Trá that evening. Discussion on history and significance of Sceilig Mhichíl, one of only three UNESCO Heritage sites on the island of Ireland.
Day 2 Light breakfast (advisable due to lengthy boat trip later). Travel by car to Portmagee (10 mins) to embark on ferry for Sceilig Tour c. 8.15 am. The boat journey takes about an hour, and we will have 2.5 hours on the Sceilig to explore and climb the 618 steps to the Monastery. We should be back in Portmagee c. 1.00 pm. We can partake of lunch and refreshment in one of the well-appointed hostelries in Portmagee and digest our experiences of the morning. We can take a tour of Ballinskelligs and Valencia Island later that evening or Sunday morning. Valencia is well worth a visit with highlights such as one of the great lighthouses of Ireland, a dinosaur track from 350 million years ago and of course Knightstown Village. Ballinskelligs boasts the monastery that the monks set up when they were forced to flee Sceilig Mhichíl and of course Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve.
